Large Item Pickup

Large item pick-up and drop- off services now available for Sangamon County residents

Monday, October 02, 2023

SANGAMON COUNTY, IL – Sangamon County has announced the start of the Large Item Pick-up Program, catering exclusively to residents living outside the City of Springfield Corporate Limits. Beginning today, October 2nd, the new program allows eligible residents to schedule pick-up or drop-off of large items not typically accommodated by regular waste management services. The Sangamon County Board unanimously approved the partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Sangamon County at its September Board meeting.

County Board Member and Chairman of the Public Health Committee, James Schackmann, says, “The Large Item Pick-up Program meets County residents’ unique needs by providing a convenient disposal option of large unneeded items. In addition to assisting some of our more rural residents, the new program will contribute to overall County cleanliness.”

All eligible residents qualify for free scheduled residential curbside pick-up of up to six items per calendar year. Pick-ups can be divided into two transactions.

Eligible items include furniture, appliances, mattresses, and other bulky household objects. Restricted items include hazardous materials, tires, TVs, and other electronic goods. A complete list of eligible and restricted items can be found at SangamonIL.Gov/Habitat.

County Board Member Annette Fulgenzi said, “By offering this service, we are empowering residents to dispose of their large items properly, reducing illegal dumping, and maintaining the aesthetic appeal of our County.”

Habitat for Humanity of Sangamon County provides Springfield residents with an identical large item pick-up program. The City of Springfield program is unchanged by the new partnership with the County; Springfield residents should continue to use the service as they have in the past.

“We are glad to see the Large Item Pick-up Program extending to the entire County,” said Colleen Stone, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Sangamon County. “Our program has been very successful within the City of Springfield, and I believe all residents will benefit from this service.”

Upon scheduling a pick-up, residents will receive detailed instructions and guidelines for preparing their items for collection. The program prioritizes environmentally friendly disposal methods, including recycling, repurposing, or appropriate disposal at designated facilities, in alignment with Sangamon County’s commitment to sustainable waste management practices.

Residents must schedule pick-ups and drop-offs in advance by contacting Habitat for Humanity of Sangamon County at 217-523-2710, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. or by scheduling service online at habitatsangamon.vonigo.com/external/.

Water Issue

Due to current weather, Lake Springfield is stagnant and very warm.  A perfect incubator for algae growth that causes taste and odor compounds.  They are not harmful, but can give a dirty taste to the water.  CWLP is  feeding powdered activated carbon to help with the taste, but it will not remove it completely.
